Santa Rosa traffic engineers are hoping a new kind of traffic signal will help drivers make better decisions when they make left turns at intersections in the city. The city is the first in Sonoma County to install traffic signals with flashing yellow left-turn arrows.
Phil Demery, Sonoma County’s director of transportation and public works, has announced he plans to retire a year from now after serving more than 29 years in local government. State ballot initiatives next year that could affect retirement benefits for government employees by capping or reducing pensions also played a part in his decision. “You never know what’s going to end up on the ballot,” he said.
Petaluma public works director Vince Marengo has been terminated. He is the second department head to part ways with the city in the past few weeks. The city is looking at combining the public works job with the director of the city’s water and wastewater department, a position currently being filled on an interim basis.
