The Petaluma City Council waded into the national gun control debate Monday night by backing a proposal to renew and broaden a federal ban on assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines.

North Coast jail officials Monday said they have enough beds to house more inmates following a U.S. Supreme Court decision that is expected to cause a spike in county jail populations. The key will be whether Gov. Jerry Brown is able to secure funding to help counties deal with an influx of low-level state inmates at county facilities.

Northstone Organics, a medical marijuana cooperative based in Mendocino County, appears to be about as legitimate as such an organization can be. It has a Mendocino County Sheriff’s permit to grow medical marijuana as a cooperative, undergoes county inspections and its plants are tagged with Sheriff’s Office zip ties. But the legal precautions could not guarantee safe passage of marijuana through Sonoma County.
