SMART gets OK for Airport Boulevard extension

A regional transportation panel Wednesday approved $16.7 million to extend a commuter rail line to Airport Boulevard north of Santa Rosa.

SmartWith the funding in place, the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit authority could decide to build a passenger station near the Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport, which has long been a goal, SMART officials said.

The full Metropolitan Transportation Commission must vote on the allocation next week, but a green light from the MTC’s programming committee is a key step, transportation officials said.

SMART trains are scheduled to run between Santa Rosa and San Rafael in 2016. Voters in 2008 approved a sales tax measure to fund the 70-mile line from Cloverdale to Larkspur, but the rail authority was forced to scale back the initial line due to the recession.

SMART officials say they are looking for funding to extend the line beyond the initial operating segment.

The Sonoma County Transportation Authority on Monday allocated $4.3 million for the airport extension project.

The Press Democrat has an editorial today about the SMART train going to the airport.

I measured the distance and the SMART station will be over a mile away from the airport. Not really walking distance especially with luggage.

Same with the businesses in the area.

The solution from them will be to mandate a shuttle bus at a very high cost. The taxpayers are already going to pay $14 every time someone steps on the train as it is.

Never mind, it’s all ‘free money’….

Yes Steveguy; the Narrows were postponed on purpose.

    Another Road Diet.

Quality of life, commerce, tourist, business, convenience ‘diet’.

    Seems like an obvious priority.

IF TPTB were working for us.

IF is the biggest word in the dictionary.

The Novato Narrows is seemingly postponed on purpose. while it has been the biggest obstacle to moving cars and buses.

By the way, does anyone else find the ‘completion date’ a bit false ?

First they said late 2015/early 2016. Then it was early 2016. Now it is 2016. Can’t wait until next year when they say 2017.

    Mark those words ?

The Novato narrows is now the WORST PART of the trip when I drive my wife monthly to Oakland airport for her monthly trip to see her mom in LA.

The East Bay is a breeze in comparison.

Pathetic they don’t have the cash to finish the job; obviously that should have been done before Windsor.

    Merry Christmas.

Would you rather have this, or…

    The Novato ‘narrowrs’ un-narrowed.
