Santa Rosa Planning Commissioner Curtis Byrd announced Thursday that he is running for City Council in 2014.

Byrd, 57, is a community relations specialist for Blood Centers of the Pacific.

He is a native Santa Rosan who graduated from Cardinal Newman High School. He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Sonoma State University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in divinity studies at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley.

Byrd was appointed to the Planning Commission in 2010 by Councilman Gary Wysocky. He has previously served on the mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force policy team and the Community Advisory Board.

“I am prepared to make tough budget decisions to create sustainable jobs, improve our roads, green up our parks, provide clean power to ratepayers, advocate for affordable housing and clean up code violations,” Byrd said in a statement.

Other priorities he noted include annexing Roseland, dealing with the city’s huge pension debt, and building a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Highway 101.

He is the second candidate to announce his intent to run for the City Council next year. The other is former Press Democrat columnist Chris Coursey.

Three of the seven council seats are open in 2014. They are currently held by Mayor Scott Bartley, Jake Ours, and Robin Swinth.

What an ignorant comment. Typical from a lefty, but still ignorant.

Good for Byrd. Let him run. He can’t be any worse than a lot of the other people in office around here.

    You folks sound like racists.

Maybe you should demand his birth certificate. While you’re at it, get one from Ted Cruz’s mom. In case you don’t know, he’s that whack job Texas politician who was born in Canada.

Hmmm, I missed the Reverend part of Reverend Byrd in the intro. Like I said before; don’t live in SR, so got no dog in the hunt. As a matter of simple Political Philosophy; I never vote for “Bible Thumpers” running for Public Office, period!

From what I’ve seen during Planning Commission hearings, the REVEREND Byrd (as he likes to call himself), attempts to bully any applicant that happens to be a business. He is a chip off the Wysocky block and has no respect for those who actually create jobs. I for one will not be voting for the Reverend.

    Dear Curtis,
Just curious; in what quadrant of Santa Rosa do you live in? would that be NE, NW, SE, OR SW? The city needs some diverse representation from all quadrants. The only thing I know about you, so far, is that you are in “lockstep” with a lot of folks. Have to agree with Steve Humphrey about the buzzwords. Is there anything relevant that we should know? Hope you don’t run around the neighborhood in your skivvies at 3:40 AM.

  6. Steve Humphrey says:

Well Curtis, you’ve certainly mastered all the political buzzwords. “green” “affordable” “sustainable” “clean power” and last but not least “bicycle”.
Tha should put you in the running.
