Healdsburg, Petaluma mayors part of gun background checks push

By GUY KOVNER
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

Healdsburg Mayor Susan Jones said it’s a “no-brainer” to keep people with criminal records from obtaining guns, and she’s one of more than 1,000 mayors urging Congress to require background checks for online gun purchases.

Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, chairman of the House Gun Violence Task Force, also endorsed the recommendation this week from Mayors Against Illegal Guns, an advocacy group led by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

“It’s outrageous that thousands of criminals, terrorists, domestic abusers and dangerously mentally ill individuals can bypass a background check and get a gun online with a few clicks of a mouse,” Thompson said in a written statement.

The bipartisan mayors group said Congress should “close the deadly loophole” that allows criminals to buy guns online, citing its own investigation that found one website could enable the sale of more than 25,000 guns this year to people with criminal records.

Analysis of a sampling of ads posted by prospective gun buyers on the website Armslist.com found that one in 30 had committed crimes that prohibited them from possessing a firearm, the mayors group said.

In 2012, licensed gun dealers conducted more than 8.7 million background checks and blocked 0.87 percent due to a history of crime or domestic violence, the group said. Four times as many would-be gun buyers on Armslist — 3.3 percent — were prohibited purchasers due to their criminal history.

Jones, who retired as Healdsburg’s police chief in 2010 after a three-decade law enforcement career, said she carried a gun for most of her adult life and still does on occasion.

“I think the solution (to gun violence) is not putting more guns on the street but getting them off,” she said.

Her answer to the National Rifle Association’s contention that “guns don’t kill people; people kill people” is a restatement that “people with guns kill people.”

Thompson said that 33 people are killed daily by someone using a gun for a total of more than 9,000 deaths since the Newtown, Conn. school shooting in December 2012.

Thompson’s bill to expand background checks for all commercial firearms sales, including those at gun shows and online, has more than 180 House co-sponsors. The bill has been referred to committee and is not scheduled for a hearing or vote in the Republican-controlled House.

Jones said the gun death toll is “disheartening” and that pressure from local governments might prompt congressional action.

Two gun control measures, including one that matches Thompson’s bill, failed in the Senate in April and Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, said this week he sees no reason to revisit the issue without sufficient support.

“We don’t have the votes,” Reid told a wire service reporter.

Petaluma Mayor David Glass, also a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, could not be reached for comment. The group includes 82 California mayors.

There are 180,000 communities in American and 19355 cities with mayors. They found a pathetic 5% to petition congress for their agenda? King Bloombergs billions must have bought the sour cream of the crop.

Listen up Ms. Mayor of Healdsburg. You’re either clueless and eager to run your mouth for the cause started by the KKK because your unintelligent or because you’re a liar. Either way you have no business deciding for anyone what they can and can’t do. Online firearms purchases must be made through a FFL licensed dealer. The background check as well as the ridiculous waiting period are already mandatory.

You people seem to believe you run things and we the people are insignificant. YOU are the insignificant. You are subordinate to we the people. Who do you think you are and who do you think we are?

You cary a gun for protection and seem to think it is an asset in keeping yourself safe. Yet you refer to the community of free, independent, and in every way equal to you or better, fellow citizens as being unworthy of the safety you openly make use of. Are you God? Do you hold some mystical ring that empowers you, not just with the liberty nature intended for you, but also the power over your fellow man and the claim that your paranoia is cause for him to be forced into helplessness. Do you take pleasure in the fantasy of grown men calling to you for help while in fear and panic? You, Ms Nobody, make me sick.

All you pukes who advocate people control through new speak deception need to shut your mouths. The dishonesty of your claims is beyond what even a child would fall for. So here is the deal I’ll make with any of the state’s forward puppets. You disarm and disband the unelected foot soldiers you wrongly refer to as police officers. You then must convince the duly elected sheriff and his staff of deputized subordinates to ignore their own rights and safety by turning in their weapons. Then Ms. Whatever, I’ll sell you my guns for double what I paid and we can enjoy your fraudulent safety together. Unless you are willing to lead by example, and from the way you act I would think you were afraid of all guns, you will continue to be an absolute failure as a human being. Your corruption has polluted you and the people of the town you claim to rule should dismiss you to save what’s left of their own integrity and human dignity.

Now some facts. You say guns are evil, I say you are evil. Let’s see if we can make some sense out of it all. CDC reports for the year 2010 11,000 homicides were committed with guns. For some perspective, 6,000 people in Amerika die every single 24 hours. How many lives were protected from violence in the same year? The numbers are far from an exact science and should not be taken as gospel without due diligence. That said, the number of instances where guns were used to defend life, property, and liberty of the innocent is between 110,000 and 2.5 million. Personally, I wouldn’t give a damn if it was zero, I don’t bow to worthless liars who have forgotten their place in the people’s society.

For those who have embraced the indignity of being under false authority and have become comfortable with the constant disrespect of being lied to. Look at the facts and tell me how the hell you feel justified in disarming your people with threats and acts of brutal and unreasoned violence. Any blood spilled by bullets will be on your hands. You are the real threat to peace and to the establishment you are a tool to be manipulated and discarded as needed.

You don’t have to wake up and assert your right to enjoy in the freedom nature has provided all of us. Sleep if you must but you should know that your life is all your own and you should respect it and honor it. It was not a gift from government. Government isn’t God.

Robert is absolutely right. Do the research and stop writing these “chicken little” articles.
As voters, we should also scrutinize the gullibility of those who we elected… or is this just some misguided grandstanding on their part?

The places in this country with the most gun control have the most gun violence.

The places with the least gun control have the least gun violence.

Yes, those with criminal records that include the use of a firearm should be scrutinized carefully.

However true to incrementalism (which is being used to great effect) it won’t stop there.

UN globalists want us disarmed so they can implement their ‘Plans’.

American being armed is slowing the tyranny much more than our rule book…

What do they call that ‘living document’ again?

    Oh yeah, the Constitution.

I am sorry to see the author of this very debated issue and legislation show such ignorance. More sad is that it is probably calculated ignorance. No, you can not legally buy a gun on line and by pass a background check. If you believe that, you are wrong. If you know that and still spout the lie, then you are not to be trusted.

ALL sales on line MUST go through an licensed dealer and a background check is required. In California, it has been this way for decades, even person to person is required to go through a dealer. Many guns have been bought and sold illegaly for many decades. I am just wondering how stupid someone has to be to think a criminal will stop being a criminal all because another law is passed, just like the 12,000 other gun laws criminals ignore. One more will only effect citizens who follow laws. They usually become the victims.

I agree that background checks could help keep guns out of the hand of people who shouldn’t have them but…

I also know the tactics of the left.

They want single payer Health Care but since they know they can’t get it they pass a Health Care “reform” law that intends to bury Private Health Insurance companies in a sea of red tape forcing them to raise their premiums beyond the reach of most people. While simultaneously creating Government Health Exchanges that will undercut Private Insurance rates thus forcing people to move to Government Health Care.

Eventually the ONLY “choice” you will have is Single Payer Heath Care.

The devious methods employed by the left to drive their agenda and the lies they use to lure in support from the useful idiots among us leave me no choice but to support the party of “NO”!

I would prefer to support some middle ground on the Gun Control issue but with the left it’s “all or nothing” so I’ll be fighting for the “nothing”.
