Rohnert Park city manager asks council for assistant

By JEREMY HAY

THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

Rohnert Park City Manager Gabe Gonzalez is asking the City Council to unfreeze and fill an assistant city manager position.

He is recommending that the city hire someone from within its ranks, which would cost it between $25,000 and $40,000.

The change, he said, will allow the city to correct “an imbalance” that prioritizes daily management tasks and prevents him from fully focusing on strategic planning

and developing policy to advance the city’s longterm interests.

“This structure is counter-productive to how I envision we need to be operating,” he said in a proposal to the council which is to be reviewed tonight.

If no current city employees can be found to fill the position, he said, then the position would remain empty until a later date.

The position was frozen in early 2011 when the city was still confronting a steep deficit.

Hey, this must mean good news for the M-section pool. It’s been unfairly singled-out and shut down due to lack of money, though that was really based on someone else’s spending priorities. The city has no problem taking the M-sections property tax money, it just wants to spend it elsewhere.

If we have money for additional city staff, than I guess that same staff has now run out of excuses for keeping our pool closed and making all our youth go across town during the summer months.

I can’t imagine what kind of assistant could be hired for $25,000 to $40,000. Suck it up and do your job.

@John, yup, brand new article today ranking States from best to worst run.

I think you know where California finished; dead last…a big part of that is due to the massive indebtedness of our bloated government.

So what’s wrong with this picture? Gabe makes $165k and can’t do his job. But if Rohnert Park hires an Assistant for him the Assistant will earn $25k (=$12.02 per hour)? I’m guessing that this person will be either part-time without benefits or not experienced for starting out at that salary.

Yeah, the city has functioned for 5 years without it but now that the money is flowing into the city, EXPAND!!

What’s another $140,000+ a year in salary, plus benefits, plus lifetime retirement pension? The taxpayers will pay for it. we all know that the person hired from “within” will leave an open position that will be filled. The hire from within is just a way to pull the wool over the eyes of the Sheeple voters.

I can translate the rhetoric for everyone…Hire from “within its ranks” to address an “imbalance” means promote someone as a political favor.

They’re nuts, fiscal spending and hiring more personal, bloated – bloated – bloated.

California ranks 1st or last depending on how you want to see it, worst place ever to run or operate a business. No amount of money will attract people to come live or work here, they’d be dumb..

Do as many others, Nevada or Texas, business friendly, low tax, affordable housing and jobs….

Suck it up Gabe, at $165,000/year in salary put in a few more hours for your oh so important “Strategic Planning.”

You main task SHOULD be day to day management activities…starting with preventing Rohnert Park from living beyond its means.
