Congressional candidate defends removal of ‘irrelevant’ spiritual blogs

By GUY KOVNER
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

Stacey Lawson, a San Rafael businesswoman and Democratic candidate for Congress, was an active blogger on The Huffington Post website for about two years.

Her blogs, posted about once a week in 2007 and 2008, were devoted to her deeply personal experiences from childhood in Washington state to her meeting an Indian guru in 2004 and her subsequent spiritual journey.

But now, with Lawson running for public office for the first time, the writings have been deleted from The Huffington Post, prompting criticism from some opponents that she is scrubbing away parts of her background.

The blogs, steeped in metaphysical discourse, relate to a part of Lawson’s persona that her political campaign does not mention.

Links to some of Lawson’s old blogs lead to an editor’s note that says, “This post has been removed at the request of the blogger.”

They writings are, however, accessible to anyone savvy in retrieving online material.

Lawson acknowledged removing the blogs, which she considered “irrelevant” to her candidacy.

“I’m not trying to hide anything,” she said Thursday, noting that she has “a deep and rich personal life.”

Lawson, 41, who has a master’s degree from Harvard Business School, blogged about truth, joy and consciousness, rather than business marketing plans or political positions.

“Truth be told, I fancy myself a modern day mystic, someone weaving together these worlds of the mundane and the magical,” she blogged on Sept. 17, 2007.

Subsequent blogs were titled “Listening to the Voice Within,” “Who are you, Really?” and “The Inmate Running Your Asylum: Ego.”

In a Sept. 24, 2007 blog, Lawson wrote: “In fact, from a very young age, I knew I was God.” She said it was “a simple knowing,” a sense that “something much greater than me was directing this life.”

Lawson, one of 12 candidates in the race for an open North Coast congressional seat that represents part of Sonoma County, has said she made an “evolutionary path” from entrepreneur to politician.

Susan Adams, a Marin County supervisor competing for the congressional seat, questioned why Lawson removed her blogs.

“Why would you take that down? Why would you try to hide what you were standing behind before?”

Norman Solomon, another Marin-based candidate, said he has read some of Lawson’s blogs and is a longtime Huffington Post blogger himself.

“I have never dreamed of trying to have anything I wrote removed from the site,” Solomon said.

Tom Higgins, Solomon’s political consultant, said the website scrubbing was pointless. “What was she (Lawson) thinking? This stuff doesn’t go away.”

Lawson’s campaign for the most sought-after political post on the North Coast is rooted in economics: revitalizing local manufacturing and “rebuilding our middle class.”

Lawson, who announced her candidacy last August, made a splash by raising more than $450,000 in campaign cash by the end of the year, and remains in second place, with $740,797 in receipts through March 31.

Assemblyman Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael, is the fund-raising leader with $864,567 in a primary election campaign on pace to cost a record $3 million or more.

There are now only two Lawson blogs — both posted since February — at The Huffington Post, a news website that covers politics, business, entertainment, technology and culture.

Both are about her campaign theme, with headlines relating to jobs and economical revitalization.

Her old blogs have not vanished. They can be found using an online tool called Wayback Machine, which captures and retains archived versions of web pages over time.

Lawson said she realizes the blogs are still accessible on the Internet. In launching her campaign, she said she established a website devoted to matters that are “relevant to this race.”

OK folks, really, get off it. I’m a Solomon supporter, but Stacey Lawson’s spiritual quest is the most appealing aspect of her. Anyone who has done even a cursory study of the Eastern mystical tradition knows that the statement of the knowledge of our core of divinity is
standard fare. I hope that she will use this experience of running for Congress to deepen her self-knowledge and understand how she was co-opted by wealthy backers to get into a situation that has been a source of pain.

  2. Where's the dirt on Norman? says:

Would you rather have a Socialist or God? What a weird race. Neither one of these egotists has held office and they’re running for US Congress.

Never even been on a city council but they know all about it.

Soloman is dangerous because he’s pretending to be a Democrat. He’s a ‘new age’ Democrat—a Democratic Socialist of America.

I am a Democrat. Now that I know that the Democratic Socialists of America http://www.dsa.org are running the left wing of the Democratic Party–it says so on their website–I am not voting for a Dem who says they support the Progressive Democratic Caucus. The PDC was created by the Democratic Socialists of America.

Yes, I know all of the McCarthy stuff. Yes, I remember red-baiting.
This is real, though, and by their own admission.

Norman Soloman is counting on your ignorance. He’s thrilled that Stacy Lawson’s an egomaniac. He’s hoping you don’t look into his own life too closely.

    No on Lawson.
    No on Soloman.

Yeah if you’re a Republican. Just look at his list of endorsers for proof positive.

We dont need that right now, the liberals have destroyed the state. How about some independents that are not bought off by the unions

  7. Knowledge is bondage says:

So I guess this explains why Stacey doesn’t feel she needs to have knowledge of issues that concern voters in California – such as her gaping lack of understanding of Prop. 13 from a recent radio interview:

    http://empirereport.com/2012/04/25/knowledge-is-bondage-stacey-lawson-originally-published-at-huffington-post/

I guess there’s no reason to fix our educational system in California since, according to Stacey, ignorance is bliss. I’m really glad this stuff is coming out….man was I fooled.

What’s next? Does she think Petaluma could become a target from a Nuclear attack by stationing a decommissioned ship in our turning basin….oh wait, that was another dim wit now running for Congress…Tiffany Renee…who actually doesn’t seem to far off from Stacey in terms of her hokey new agism…

Lawson couldn’t vote for Obama, but she could write him a $2,300 check in the primary? I guess she thinks a check matters more than a vote…

  11. Marx was Right says:

Stacey Lawson is the ideal democrat candidate for the 2nd democrat Congressional District. She is mystical and magical by her own admission. She began her spiritural journey after meeting her Indian guru.

She is a modern day mystic. Lawson has not held public office. Going to Congress is a natural next step on her personal modern day mystic journey.

Yes, no experience and mystical, that is a sure background for a Congressional candidate.

  12. Too "new agey" for office says:

What we need is more use of reason and logic to solve our real problems, not more mindless new age “spiritualism”. I’ve gone through her writings….typical “woo woo” crap from people with far too much time on their hands, and not enough skepticism. And her trippy guru peddling BS is just another charlatan…just like Stacey. He even offers a “Soul Cleansing Package”….barf.

Oh, and he brings riches to all who follow him….is that how Stacey and her pals got their money? http://www.miraclesofdattatreya.com/

    Here’s an interesting article: http://www.nowtoronto.com/news/story.cfm?content=144721

It’s pretty clear why she removed her blogs….they are indeed embarrassing and unbecoming of a congressional leader.

  13. God complex says:

“In fact, from a very young age, I knew I was God.” – Stacey Lawson

This is a bit disturbing. The certainty expressed with this quote, as well as the ego, is unfitting for a congressional leader. I find it frankly creepy.

What I imagine she meant is that “god” is within all of us, but still, it smacks of a very simplistic and unprovable stipulation which I personally find a tad offensive.

It reminds me a bit of the hubris of Bush and Palin….far too much self certitude. When you couple that with her ignorance…for example, recently fumbling on a question about prop. 13…it’s concerning.

The last think we need is another politician – with little to no previous political record (she failed to vote in 8 out of the last 12 elections, including not voting for Obama in 2008…or against Prop. 8 for the matter) – AND a god complex. Her entire candidacy is sinking by the day….but that’s what happens when you aren’t vetted before hand and have a lot to explain.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. She just had another video removed of her feeding Burger Ling to homeless people with her guru. And where did StaceyTV go?

Stacey Lawson is hiding something, she is hiding too much about herself. Lawson is not a viable candidate yet the Sonoma County Farm Bureau endorsed her. The Farm Bureau lost my membership for life due to this endorsement.
