Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday signed AB 517, the bill that ratifies his gambling agreement with the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria.

The agreement, called a compact, allows the tribe to start work on a 3,000-slot machine casino outside Rohnert Park.

The compact now faces one final governmental hurdle at the federal Department of the Interior, which has 45 days to approve or reject it.

The governor’s signature has been expected since the state Assembly passed the bill last week.

The Interior Department is also expected to approve the agreement. If the department does not act, the compact takes effect automatically after 45 days, although it was not clear Thursday when that period begins.

This week, Station Casinos, the Las Vegas company bankrolling the project, said the casino would open to gamblers by the end of 2013.

Before it breaks ground, the tribe must finalize a separate agreement with Sonoma County officials on how it will financially address the casino’s impacts.

One good thing about the RP casino:
When Fauxcahontas and his band of nomadic natives open their full-service emporium of vice, the busses full of asians from SF will pull over there rather than continuing out the teacherous Hwy 128 to River Rock.
Then the Dry Creek Pomos can blame the Graton Pomos for screwing up their good thing rather than the universally reviled White Man.
For once we get a break!

Greg Sarris is saving Sonoma County. I love it that he has single-handedly defeated all the political forces lined up against him. He stood up to the Press Democrat too. If he did curse them out, they deserved it. I’ve cursed the Press Democrat a lot worse just sitting here at my computer, but no one heard. A lot of people will be hearing what Sarris has to say now. This is exciting. I’m really looking forward to seeing this completed.

Thank you Mr. Sarris. I truly am looking forward to shaking your hand and personally thanking you for all the thankless tasks you did, known and unknown.
