Santa Rosa council picks new vice mayor

John Sawyer was named vice mayor of Santa Rosa Tuesday evening.

Sawyer and Councilman Gary Wysocky were nominated to replace Jake Ours, who has served in the vice-mayor post for about 10 months.

Four council members voted to support Sawyer, while three voted to support Wysocky, votes that followed a now familiar pattern on the sharply divided council.

First elected to the council in 2004, Sawyer served six-months as acting mayor in 2008 following the death of Mayor Bob Blanchard.

The long-time owner of the former Sawyer’s News downtown, Sawyer, 56, now is running for the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. “It will be a challenging year, but that’s not all that unusual these days,” Sawyer said.

Unlike the mayor’s two-year term, the vice mayor serves just one year.

Wysocky should be recalled, not even considered for Vice Mayor. He and the others on the council took and oath of office to uphold the constitution and the laws of the land.

Wysocky has taken the position of supporting people who ignore the city’s ordinances regarding camping on public property.

Wysocky was not elected to promote his personal beliefs, he was elected to uphold the laws and regulations of Santa Rosa. He took an oath to do so. He has failed in his office and should be recalled.

One step on the road to common sense, one little toe in the water toward redeeming Santa Rosa’s march toward something that may pass for normal in the land of loonys.

But in the spirit of compromise, Sawyer has agreed to ride a bicycle to all official city functions.
And Wysocky will serve as City Council laughingstock.

Whew, at least it wasn’t Wysocky.

Wysocky is proud to give all his power and authority to the anarchists, so he didn’t lose the vote. Occupy Santa Rosa (our new civic leaders) lost the vote.

It’s a right wing season. This is expected. But the 99% are changing that.
