Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill authored by state Sen. Noreen Evans that is designed to even the playing field in California’s competitive Dungeness crab industry.

The bill, SB 369, sets crab trap limits in an effort to prevent out-of-state fishermen from gaining unfair advantage over others in the pursuit of the prized crustacean.

“It has been a long road getting here, but with the cooperation and close involvement of our fishermen they now have the rules they wanted to protect the future of both our fishermen and the Dungeness crab fishery,” Evans, D-Santa Rosa, said in a statement.

The new law also is intended to protect marine mammals from getting entangled in fishing gear by reducing the amount of gear left in the water.

Evans said her bill followed the recommendations of the former Dungeness Crab Task Force.

Crab fishermen purchase crab trap permits and pay tag fees which pay for the trap tags and the administration and enforcement of the program. Only fishermen who are eligible to own California crab vessel permits can purchase the permits.

Don’t matter one way or the other, the new Asian export market for Dungeness Crab will leave us locals eating the imitation (imported from Asia).

(3)Under existing law, except as expressly provided otherwise, any violation of the Fish and Game Code, or of any rule, regulation, or order made or adopted under the code, is a misdemeanor.

Because this bill would extend the operation of the Dungeness crab vessel permit program and thereby the crimes imposed for a violation of those provisions, and impose additional requirements the violation of which may be crimes, the bill would create a state-mandated local program by creating new crimes.

only Evans can make a criminal out of the working man, this is going to come back and bite you on the tail pipe

How about charging a HUGE fee and restricting the number of permits issued to/for “out of state” fishermen?

Currently the “out of state” permit is a mere $257.75 more than a resident permit. So about 50lbs of crab caught to pay the difference.

Another sabotage under the guise of help or ‘protecting the enviroment’. Just like the Tomales Bay oyster story, just like Prop. 19, just like the other WSC story on screwing the downtown merchants in Petaluma, Cotati, Santa Rosa, and countless other communities and industries.
Just like turning the Central Valley into a dust bowl. Just like destroying hundreds of dams, etc.,etc..
All of the prominate political figures in Sonoma Co. are Agenda 21 ‘agents of change’(Noreen Evans and Valerie Brown).
Our way of life is under assault people.
The sooner we all get on the same page and recognize Agenda 21 and all of it’s constrictive tentacles, the sooner we can unify towards cutting out this cancer.

When the flotilla of Russian boats that were camped at Fort Ross took all of the fur seals, we built a State Park.

We should encourage the out-of-state (and foreign) fishing boats to fish the local Dungeness Crabs to extinction. Then, we’ll get another State Park!

Yay more parks! Boo crab cakes!

I for one will now sleep a little easier now that the Evens has made crab fishing a monopoly for fishermen who are “eligible” to own California crab vessel permits. And all of the permits and fees are paying bureaucrats who will be hired to enforce the program.

Sounds like a another program that will drive up crab prices with no benefit to the fishermen.
