Woolsey gives 400th anti-war speech

Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Petaluma, delivered her 400th speech against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on the House floor Tuesday.

Woolsey, a former Petaluma city councilwoman who was elected to Congress in 1992, began by noting that her series of anti-war speeches — delivered every day Congress was in session — began in April 2004, a year after the invasion of Iraq.

“And so since that day, I’ve stood here in this spot to say over and over again that these wars are eroding our spiritual core; bankrupting us morally and fiscally; teaching our children that warfare is ‘the new normal,’” she said.

Woolsey noted that the Iraq war and former President Bush were “quite popular” in 2004, but that “gradually, the tide of public opinion turned” and the war began “winding down.”

Two polls support her contention.

Pew Research Center found in April 2003 that 74 percent of respondents felt the U.S. was right to use force in Iraq and 19 percent felt it was wrong. Last September, 41 percent said it was right; 51 percent wrong.

CBS News Polls in August 2003 found a virtual tie on the question of whether the Iraq war was worth the loss of American lives and other costs: 46 percent said yes; 45 percent no. Last August, 20 percent said the war was worth the costs; 72 percent said it was not.

Woolsey said she is “proud of what we have accomplished” but also frustrated because the wars continue, with more than 6,100 Americans dead and $3.2 trillion spent over 10 years.

Woolsey, who announced last month that she will retire next year after completing 20 years in Congress, said she will give “as many of these speeches as I can” in her remaining year and a half in office.

I’d like to know more about the Mosquito Abatement District, as well. They don’t want anyone to know details of their budget ! ? Something is illegal, for sure.

Here we go with the rants and the moaning and groaning against Woolsey. She has always been against the war. She didn’t waffle around all over the place like other Congressmembers. She wasn’t part of starting 2 unfunded wars. The cost of those 2 unfunded wars has been part of what’s wrong with our economy. The troops shouldn’t have been sent into any of the countries. That money could have been used for ALL KINDS OF JOBS. And not being in the financial hole because of those wars could have helped this country weather the housing bubble.

You complain she hasn’t done anything. Well voting against the war something she did for the American people.

“teaching our children that welfare is ‘the new normal,’” she said.

Oh wait a minute. That’s what she did, not what she said

400 speeches on the same topic?

This reminds me of the saying that “the definintion of idiocy is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.”

Good riddance to this old welfare bum. She can retire in hippy land and continue to live of the tax payers there.

    Where’s the budget?
    Where are the jobs?
How is Woolsey going to cut excess government spending to help average citizens?
Why did she say last year that Medicare was not in trouble finanacially and that the democrat plan to cut $575 billion from it, yet cover more people with better services was possible?

I don’t care about her endless repetitious, ineffective rants- I want to know what she is going to do to fix the mess she has created before she abandons ship.

    well said everyone!
400 speeches and still we have war. Boy does she do a poor job in congress. She has done nothing. She is a huge embarrassment!
    Bye Bye Lynn

While Woolsey’s anti-war screeds are absurd and meaningless, there are some good ones from more intelligent spokespersons:

There’s several related videos to this one you’ll be able to find easily too. I’m waiting to hear what he has to say about Casey Anthony too.

I feel sorry for the House of Representatives and the few CSPAN viewers who have had to listen to 400 speeches by Woolsey. If they were not asleep, her speeches certaintly act as a sedative for most people.

Please tell us what Woolsey has accomplished during her time in Washington except to draw a paycheck from the taxpayers? When is her term up?

    Who cares about Woolsey ?

What about the Mosquito Abatement District and its secret financial schemes? The article is there today and no comments are allowed here for that scam ?
