Evans gets to chair Senate Judiciary Committee

Noreen Evans

State Sen. Noreen Evans, D-Santa Rosa, got the job she wanted as chairwoman of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary.

An attorney who practiced law for 20 years before her election to the Legislature, Evans said she asked Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg for the assignment.

The Judiciary Committee vets legislation dealing with civil rights, family law, landlord and tenant law, property law, liability, court systems, consumer protection and constitutional issues.

The assignment is appropriate, Evans said, noting that she is one of the few lawyers in the Senate.

“I want to help the judiciary do more with less,” Evans said, noting that Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposed budget cuts $200 million from the judicial branch.

Evans said she will also be a member of the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee.

Termed out of the Assembly after six years, Evans won a seat in the 40-member upper house in November, taking over from former Sen. Pat Wiggins, also a Santa Rosa Democrat, who did not seek re-election.

The 2nd Senate District includes all of Santa Rosa; the cities of Sonoma, Healdsburg, Sebastopol, Windsor and Cloverdale; and Humboldt, Mendocino, Lake, Napa and portions of Solano counties.

Sonoma Cty is known for an incompetant and corrupt court system! What has Evans done in all the years she has been in the legislature to correct it?

It is often said here that facts, laws, and Constitution have less bearing on a court decision than who the parties are!

OK, I’m no fan of Evans’ politics, but to suggest she is insensitive to the tragedy in Tuscon last week is over the top. Let’s ratchet things down a notch, shall we?

I would like to see Evans for once show compassion towards the victims in the Arizona tragedy. She has done nothing but finger point since Day 1. Listen to what your leader Obama stated – We can not use this occasion as one more reason to turn on each other.
