VIDEO: Sept. 20 6th Congressional District debate

On Monday, Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Petaluma, squared off against Republican challenger Jim Judd and Eugene E. Ruyle, who is running under the Peace & Freedom flag for the 6th Congressional District seat. The 90-minute debate, organized by the League of Women Voters, was held at the Santa Rosa City Council chambers. LWV’s Ellen Swenson moderated it. For ease of watching and technical delivery speed, the video is divided into three parts – broken apart below in separate video players.

Our report on the debate can be found here.

  3. Stephen Anthony says:

Jim Judd just mouths cliches and phony tea party talking points. He and his other tea party friends make me ill, all they do is bash the government but then they can’t wait to get themselves on the government payroll. Look at Doris Gentry, Tea Party candidate in the 7th AD, she has made money (our tax dollars) by raising foster kids for years, paid for by the government that she keeps saying she wants to get off everyone’s back and “cut back on” I am sure she doesn’t want to “cut back” the part of the govt that has been giving her money to support these kids.
The hypocrisy and smugness of the Tea Partiers is truly sickening.

    @Political Scientist

And I agree that there wasn’t a whole lot of new ground broke during the debate by anyone.

But it’s rather silly that people raise up straw man attacks instead of actually talking about the issues at hand. I guess when all else fails just start slandering people.

  5. Roxanne says:

I attended the debate between Lynn Woolsey and Jim Judd and appreciated that Jim asked the moderator to repeat the question because Lynn Woolsey did not. It gave the audience a chance to hear the question again.

I think it is time for the career politician Lynn Woolsey to step down. Ms Woolsey does not have much to report as far as submitting bills that actually got passed that helped our district. She has done very little for our district such as schools; Medicare benefits are too low for our district because we are listed as rural; no help to our farmers, she wanted to take 50,000 acres of family farms and expand the Pt. Reyes National Seashore; no help for inheritance tax relief for our farmers and businesses.

    Way to go Jim Judd

It’s hard to attack someone on what they said when they didn’t bother to say anything.

  7. Jim says:

    @Stephen Anthony

So after the whole debate, you came away with Jim being smug and sexist? Based on what because I didn’t hear him say anything during the debate of the sort.

It’s rather quite interesting that folks who can’t come up with something about what was actually said during the debate resort to straw man attacks.

I attended the debate Monday night, and even Woolsey’s supporters seemed deflated by her performance. She simply did not inspire, and her attempt at explaining her wanting to be paid more(while her constituents are losing jobs and homes)came across as oh so much whining.

@Meg C. I didn’t say that Judd is sexist because he has a penis. I have no idea whether he does or not. I said his attitude was smug and arrogant and condesending and his manner to the Congresswoman was sexist and disrespectful. He has a big ego and it shows. As far as the Tea Party credentials that he tries so hard to hide, he is a supporter of extending the Bush tax cuts for people with income over 250K and the poor deluded tea partiers (all of them who appeared to be white and middle age and middle class) don’t get that he is not representing them but business interests.

  10. POLITICAL REALIST says:

    @ Stephan Anthony,

Funny, I was there and I did not hear any jeering- does it sound like jeering on the tape?
I do know that at one point near the beginning some people started to boo Lynn Woolsey, which I found childish and disrespectful.
Jim Judd was having none of that and made it clear to the audience that they should stop it immediately. Is that sexist for a man to stop people from booing a woman?Or pour her some water? Or talk to her and shake her hand prior to the debate?
Is it arrogant to point out some of the shorcomings of your debate challengers positions?
What I find truly arrogant is telling constituents that Lynn Woolsey knows best and that none of our voices matter.
Also disrespectful is getting another form letter saying “thank you for your support” when you have been calling for a month trying to get some real answers and clearly stating your opposition to her positions.
Using taxpayer money to rush back to Washington shortly after coming back for break to quickly pass another big democrat reelection/spending bill is also disrespectful.
Also, while Jim Judd was answering a question, Lynn Woolsey turned to Eugene Ruyle and began a conversation, laughing it up- I could hardly believe the level of disrespect- I have pictures to prove it.
Stephan Anthony speaks as if he has been to a tea party rally, which I highly doubt. At least I am not hearing so much of the arrogant and disrespectful names that are often used by those like Stephan to attempt to degrade the tea party attendees.
We have had a majority of very liberal elected officials in California for a long, long time and we are teetering on bankruptcy. To keep insisting on the same failed policies that have gotten us into this mess is not only arrogant, it is foolish.

  11. Stephen Anthony,

“…arrogant, sexist and condescending … support group for angry white people … angry racist …”

This really isn’t sending me a very positive message about what Woolsey supporters have to say to the issues. I was unimpressed with her responses during the debate, I’m decidedly less impressed by name calling. Lynn Woolsey has been a lousy Representative for the 6th District, and now her term is nearing an end. Her supporters would do better to start looking for a viable candidate to replace her in a run against Jim Judd in 2012, rather than alienating 30% of the population with name calling.

    Regards,
    Chuck

WOW!!!!!! I never thought I would see the day…… People are finally tired of Woolsey and her spouting off to the rest of the country how she represents us!!!!!! Thank God(yes I said it GOD) for the voices of reason!!!!!!! I had no idea what Jim Judd’s stances on the issues were until I watched this. Now that I do he has my vote!!!!! The most important thing he said… was if he’s in office for ten years and he is no longer approachable to us FIRE HIM!!!! He gets it!!!! It’s not about him or Woolsey it’s about us the people they want to represent….. VOTE JIM JUDD!!!!!

  13. KanakaRican says:

Stephen Anthony, are you serious? Are you really going to attack someone because their opinion is different than yours by grouping people and accusing them of being arrogant, sexist and condescending? That is sad and shameful and very common. The left is always playing that race card and doing the name calling while claiming they unite people, how divisive and deceptive is that? To come to that conclusion from one sentence with 8 words in it is absurd at the least and comical at best.

I always told my kids they would never make many friends or get respect from anyone if they treated people mean and called them names. The same goes for adults.

  14. Meg C says:

I love how Stephen thinks because the opponent has a penis, he is automatically sexist.

Could you possibly make an argument that is based on fact, rather than on throwing out words like “Sexist” and “racist”? Those are not based on any fact whatsoever. I know, because I KNOW Jim Judd. He has two wonderful, strong, intelligent daughters, he respects ME, another woman, his campaign manager is a woman…And as for racist? His son in law is a Guatemalan immigrant for god sakes, and he LOVES Jose and family.

Ruyle of Peace and Freedom won the debate, by far. Dump the Dems and retire the Repubs, vote Peace and Freedom.

  16. Stephen Anthony says:

@Retire Woolsey “Judd Crushes It and is Clearly in Command” (!) Thanks for perfectly embodying the arrogant, sexist and condescending ethos of the Tea Party Platform. I was at the debate and I agree with Laura Gonzalez it looked very much like a support group for angry white people. The jeering when Woolsey said that immigration was down, showed the angry racist underbelly of the Tea Partiers and Judd. Not pretty.

  17. KanakaRican says:

What a great night! Cudo’s for Ms Woolsey for coming out and facing a real opponent! Jim was obviously clear on all the issues and in my opinion, showed that he will be a leader who will represent District 6.

Even Lynn Woolsey said we are “organized” and now we need to step up and work harder to make this happen.

Get on the phones. Knock on doors. Talk to your family and friends. Donate. Donate. Donate. This is it people, we need to cling to the values that made America the great Nation it is and move forward by voting in people who will respect and honor the position of being a public servant. Vote in people who will serve their constituents and not their selves, special interests or lose their souls to power or greed.

Let’s kick the Woolsey out of Washington!
