Our latest online survey of Press Democrat letter writers and other readers shows surprisingly strong support for many of the major ideas the president expressed in his State of the Union address on Wednesday – even the development of new “safe, clean nuclear power plants.”
The president’s discussion about “opening new offshore areas for oil and gas development” also got a fair amount of support although readers were very divided over this.
When asked what they thought of the president’s statement that Congress should not “walk away” from health care reform, 78 percent agreed. Sixty-eight percent said they “strongly agree.” Thirteen percent said they “strongly disagree.”
Seventy percent said they supported the president’s plan to freeze discretionary spending, while 26 percent were opposed, including 15 percent that were strongly opposed.
Forty-seven percent said they agreed with the president about opening new offshore areas for oil and gas development. Fifty percent disagreed including 33 percent who said they “strongly disagree.”
Nineteen percent said they were “very satisfied” with President Obama’s overall job performance in his first year of office. Thirty-six percent said they were “somewhat satisfied” while 45 percent said they were dissatisfied including 27 percent who said they were “very dissatisfied.”
Surprisingly, 57 percent of readers agreed with the president’s ideas about building new nuclear energy plants. (To read more about this, see my Sunday column, “Readers react to Obama’s ‘clean nuclear power’ idea.”)
In all, nearly 300 people responded to the informal, invitation-only survey conducted on Thursday and Friday. To take the survey for yourself and see other results, click here.

Here is a link to a clean energy story that will surprise almost everyone. It opens many doors that can accelerate the reduction in the need for fossil fuels.

The star of the story is fractional Hydrogen. To see how it might be utilized in other ways, that allow our love affair with vehicles to change future cars and trucks into power plants, see: http://www.aesopinstitute.org
While we have developed a different theoretical understanding and our technologies are completely different, we agree that fractional hydrogen allows one barrel of water to release the energy equivalent of 200 barrels of oil.
I believe almost all Americans, from the White House on down, would like to see alternatives to imported oil and less expensive ways to generate electricity.
“They who write the questions, control the answers.”
What does that even mean? It’s a poll. People respond to the questions, and the answers are what they are. I looked at the poll and the questions are straightforward. Yeesh. Your comment is absurd.
They who write the questions, control the answers. Readers have grown too smart for this kind of Obama shoe licking.
Unbelievable. I looked at the survey and found it tremendously skewed to getting a favorable answer for Obama. The question to ask is:
Do you believe Obama is telling the truth about his desire to have more nuclear energy?
Do you believe Obama is telling the truth about oil exploration?
Unequivocably, NO! Because his past actions and they people that he has place are designed to be his strawmen. Then if his rhetoric fails to materialize he then blames the strawmen. The people who believe this president are such fools
The problem isn’t what Obama says during the State of the Union Speech. The question is, does he mean it? He spoke of nuclear power, for example. Would he actually do this, or would he simply kowtow to the environmental lobby? My bet is on the latter.
Also, his talk of nuclear power might be a back door for him to sell the technology to a foreign power, such as, say Iran. He doesn’t seem to be too concerned about their development of nuclear technology, so it kind of makes sense. Maybe that’s what he meant.
Where do you guys get your survey numbers from the White House press room?
